Travel with ease by land, air or sea

Getting to the island is a breeze! By land, the island is 531 miles from Dallas, and 367 miles from Houston. By air, three airports in the Rio Grande Valley provide access to the island including Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport, Valley International Airport and McAllen International Airport. By sea, the Intracoastal Waterway provides access to boats of all sizes.

From an abundance of wind and water sports, to bay and offshore fishing, to a variety of attractions just steps from the beach, year-round fun is plentiful on South Padre Island. Here’s jut a preview of what visitors can expect:

  • Exceptional bird watching. In October and November, fall migration brings many new species to the Island; after that, wintering birds take center stage. The South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center offers exhibits on birding and other natural features of the Island, along with a five-story viewing tower, viewing blinds and boardwalk nature trails. Guided birding tours are also available. 
  • Giant sea turtles. Visitors can view and learn about these appealing creatures, including the endangered Kemp’s ridley, at Sea Turtle, Inc., the Island’s only rescue, rehabilitation and conservation facility.
  • Take to the water with sports. Get active and take up kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, stand-up paddle boarding or flyboarding. Rent your equipment and take a lesson from a variety of expert, local vendors.

And, don’t miss the Island’s main shopping event, SPI Market Days, which takes place Jan. 25-27, 2019 and Feb. 22-24, 2019 at the SPI Convention Centre.   • Hook a fish and cook your catch! Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy bay and offshore fishing; charter boats or kayaks, surf fishing or wading, you can get bowed up no matter what species you’re targeting. After a long day of fishing, ask your outfitter about local spots that will cook your catch to your liking.

Indulge after a long day on the beach and experience the bold, tropical flavors of South Padre Island at one of more than 40 local dining and live venue spots. Don’t miss the Island’s newest restaurant, F&B (Food & Beverage), “a culinary sophistication blended with a nod to the Island lifestyle.” With Island casual ambience, experience modern American cuisine with a coastal flair. The Painted Marlin Grille is a waterfront restaurant that serves fresh seafood paired with a relaxed atmosphere and fantastic views. The restaurant features drink specials every day at the Mako Bar. Seasonal events
South Padre Island knows how to have fun! And, our seasonal events keep visitors excited, active and engaged. This winter, kick off the holiday season with the City of South Padre Island Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Christmas Parade on Nov. 30. The event kick off at City Hall beginning at 5 p.m., followed by the parade at 6 p.m. from Mars to Kingfish Street on Padre Boulevard. Make plans to immerse yourself in holiday seaside magic at the Island’s inaugural Holiday Sandcastle Village, where outdoor holiday-themed sandcastles will be on display every Friday through Sunday from Nov. 30  through Dec. 16 at the South Padre Island Convention Centre. Enjoy a lighted musical performance each day from dusk until 9 p.m. Then, ring in the New Year with spectacular bayside fireworks in the Island’s entertainment district. On New Year’s Day, join the 21st Annual Polar Bear Dip. Brave locals and visitors alike swim in the Gulf and then celebrate with live music and family-friendly entertainment.
